We deserve to take care of patients in a safe environment. Legislators must do more to prevent violence, keep hospitals safe, and hold management accountable.
Did you know that nursing has been called one of America's most dangerous professions?
Elise Wilson, RN, stabbed on the job.
Violence and harassment are not in our job descriptions.
HB 1546 and SB 255 would ensure that direct caregivers have a voice in safety and security.
Violence against nurses and healthcare workers is shockingly common, and it's on the rise at all types of facilities. As many as six out of ten nurses say they’ve been physically attacked or assaulted on the job. Even more have been threatened, harassed—often sexually—and intimidated. Management often tries to sweep these incidents under the rug or treat them as "part of the job."
This is not acceptable.
It’s already a felony to assault a healthcare worker, but we want to prevent incidents, not just punish them. We can do this by ensuring that nurses and other direct caregivers have a real voice in safety and security.
This legislation would require every facility to create a violence prevention committee made up of at least half direct caregivers. The committee would perform annual risk assessments to identify safety and security threats, and develop a prevention program reducing/preventing violence. If a facility acted in bad faith in refusing to adopt reasonable recommendations made by the committee, the Department of Labor and Industry could hold the facility accountable through fines and penalties.
It's time for legislators to step up and finally pass this bipartisan legislation.

Sorry, we're not targeting any representatives in your home district. But you can still help!
You can share this form with fellow nurses who live in Pennsylvania. If you work in PA but live out of state, try going back and filling out the form with your hospital's address — that will allow you to connect with the Representative who covers the area where you work.
